DAY 1 : ARRIVE IN GUWAHATI
Arrive at the Guwahati airport. Meet & assist by our driver and transfer to the hotel. On arrival check-in at the hotel. Overnight Stay .
DAY 2 : GUWAHATI SIGHTSEEING
After breakfast visit to the famous Kamakhya temple, situated on top of Nilachal hill. This temple is revered as one of the most sacred and ancient 51 Shakti Peethas in the Indian subcontinent and is devoted to the eternal feminine, the goddess of desire, “Kamakhya” – granter of desires. It symbolizes the "fusion of faiths and practices" of Aryan and non-Aryan elements in Assam. Return to hotel in the evening and overnight stay.
DAY 3 : GUWAHATI - SHILLONG (120 km / 3 hrs)
After breakfast, start your drive towards Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya. The road to Shillong offers a stunning journey through the picturesque landscapes of Meghalaya. En route stop at the Umiam Lake viewpoint to witness the picturesque view of the lake. Upon reaching, check-in at the hotel.
Time permitting go and explore the busy streets of Police Bazaar in the evening. This place attracts lots of visitors as well as tourists and is full of people engaged with their day-to-day life activities. Return to hotel, dinner and overnight.
DAY 4 : SHILLONG - DAY TRIP TO CHERRAPUNJEE (65 km / 2.5 hrs)
After breakfast, drive to Cherrapunjee. En route, visit the Elephant Falls, a three-step waterfall. Note that to visit this, one has to manoeuvre a lot of stiff steps. Upon reaching, visit the Garden of caves, with 09 different point of interests at the same place and Arwah cave known for their limestone formations and fossils. Then go to visit the Nohkalikai Falls, a plunge waterfall with a height of 335 m (1,115 feet) and Nohsngithiang Falls, popularly known as the Seven Sister Waterfall. Return to Shillong and overnight.
Things to keep in mind before entering the Caves:
- Carry a water bottle and a torchlight as its dark inside the cave.
- Avoid carrying large bags as they might get stuck in narrow passages. Keep your hands free for balance; therefore, no handbags.
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip as it slippery inside. Also, consider carrying an extra pair of shoes in the vehicle in case your shoes get wet.
- Be cautious with children; do not let go of their hands in dark or slippery areas.
- Not advisable for those with knee problems or who are not physically fit.
Cherrapunjee, locally and officially known as Sohra, is a “must-see” destination for all tourists. Apart from being the record holder for the heaviest rainfall, it was the headquarters of the Khasi/Jaintia province during British rule which was however shifted to Shillong in 1864, due to the inconvenience caused by excessive rain during the monsoon months. The average rainfall is 12,000 mm a year and the record for a single day was 2455 mm recorded in 1974 confirming it as the “Wettest place on Earth”.
DAY 5 : SHILLONG - DAY TRIP TO MAWLYNNONG & DAWKI (110 km / 4 hrs)
After breakfast drive to Mawlynnong village, considered to be the cleanest village of this region. The route to the village is through winding roads and panoramic views traveling amidst the clouds in the Shillong plateau. On arrival, take a walk around the village to see and explore the place. Also go for a short trekking to Riwai village and down to the single Decker living Root Bridge found here (about 400 meters from the roadside). We shall drive further to the Indo – Bangladesh border, Dawki and also go for a boat ride on Umngot River. Later return to Shillong by dusk. Overnight.
Living Root Bridge is one of the most extraordinary pieces of art and engineering work done by human and nature as a team. As an old tradition Khasi's have been growing / creating living root bridges to cross the rivers. Khasis used/use Rubber Plants (Ficus Elastica) for it as the tree grows on any secondary roots.
Note: A light to moderate hike is required to go down to the Single Decker Living Root Bridge.
DAY 6 : SHILLONG - MAWPHLANG SACRED GROVE FOREST & LOCAL SIGHTSEEING
After breakfast, visit the Mawphlang Sacred Grove Forest, a protected sacred forest situated in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. This place holds a very important significance concerning the Khasi culture and their beliefs. It has been preserved by the natives since ancient times as a part of their religious beliefs, in which forests are considered a sacred entity. You will be accompanied by a local guide for a short and easy walk. Later drive back to the city and visit the Don Bosco Center of Indigenous Cultures (Closed on Sunday & public holidays) in the city. Also visit The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians. Return to the hotel & overnight.
Note: The local Khasi guide is mandatory and only for Mawphlang Sacred Grove Forest.
DAY 7 : SHILLONG - GUWAHATI (120 Km / 3 hrs)
After breakfast start your drive to Guwahati airport for your onward journey.
